Brian Colwell was born in Virginia where he trained in traditional karate for several years before moving to California. Being part of a military family allowed Brian to experience several different parts of the country, carrying his love of the martial arts along with him. It is a funny thought, but as a kid Brian always wanted to be an artist, never knowing that he would eventually become a professional Martial Artist.

Brian found a positive peer group in California through Boy Scouts, where he earned his Eagle Scout. He didn't stop there though, eventually earning the Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow as well as the Founder's Award. The Boy Scout program has been influential in Brian's entire life, with his grandfather, father, and younger brother reaching that distinguished honor as well. Many times Brian has turned to the Scout Law and Oath for guidance, using these concepts as a measuring stick for his character. They became a way of life.

Brian found a way to give back to the Boy Scouts, to his community, and to his family by combining his passions: Boy Scouts and the Martial Arts. At United Studios of Self Defense in Poway Brian follows the five principles: Effort, Etiquette, Self Control, Sincerity, and Character, and has tied them to the Scout Law. He has become a merit badge counselor for San Diego Boy Scouts and volunteers his time teaching Sports, Athletics, and Personal Fitness merit badges. He uses the USSD Shaolin Kempo system as a vehicle for helping to develop these young men into Eagle Scouts. Constant never ending improvement is the key to Brian's passion for the Martial Arts. And not just for himself, but for others as well. USSD has continued for Brian as an adult where Boy Scouts left of as a kid. Amongst the many benefits Brian has felt or achieved through the Martial Arts, Brian notes the most important as: confidence, discipline, self control, and a happy healthy life both physically and mentally. When he teaches, Brian's students feel this passion, this love, and from the start they love "the Art" as well. The positive, encouraging family environment at USSD Poway is addicting. Brian always knew that his mission in life was to help people, to live a life of service. "To help other people at all times."

His calling was to become a Martial Arts instructor, to share the magic of the martial arts with as many people as possible. He thinks about his students constantly, about how to better develop them. And not just in terms of the Martial Arts. Brian feels the happiest in life when that shy four year old opens up and gives him a hug at the end of class. When his students smile and laugh, when they thank him for a great class. He leads a simple life, a happy life, and hopes you too will take that first step towards a better life by trying your first Martial Arts class at United Studios of Self Defense.

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
